Ludzi Girls alumni ease school transport woes

Former students of Ludzi Girls Secondary School in Mchinji have donated a minibus to the school in appreciation for what the institution contributed to their lives.

There was pomp and fanfare on Saturday during the school’s Golden Jubilee celebrations when the alumni paraded the new minibus in front of parents, teachers, students and guests that had gathered.

The alumni association chairperson Esther Mwesu said in an interview the group was prompted by the school’s need for a utility vehicle.

She said: “As a group, we realised that our old school was having transport problems and we thought it would be best for us to raise money to buy this bus.”

In her speech, the school’s head teacher Sister Veronica Massa hailed the alumni for the gesture, confirming that the school had transport challenges.

She said: “We have been having difficulties travelling from the school campus to town, transporting students to hospital and when students had off campus trips. Thus, we do not take this donation for granted.”

Massa  said the school has for over 50 years produced a number of graduates who are influential in various sectors.

She appealed to the alumni to continue supporting the school for the benefit of current and future students.

The alumni association raised about K6.5 million to buy the vehicle and meet other costs such as seats, windows and registration.
